The question arises: how do you ensure that your lawyer will, in fact, be competent? For most people, this is a question they do not even think to ask, much less know how to answer. However, it is an extremely important question that needs to be answered prior to retaining a lawyer's services. With some help and guidance and your willingness to devote a little time and effort into the process of choosing an attorney, the answer will not be hard to find.

I have written a guidebook to help clients learn how to choose the "right" attorney. The guide is not a directory or a list of names of recommended attorneys, but rather a resource to educate and inform clients so that they understand the types of qualifications and characteristics that distinguish one attorney from another. In the guide, I explain the importance of retaining an attorney who has experience in the specific area of law that you require services. Also, I provide a step by step approach for finding the right attorney, beginning with how to compile a list of names of qualified attorneys in your local area and ending with what you should expect and ask about during a consultation with an attorney you are considering retaining.

Also, the guide explains, in detail, the different fee structures that are commonly used by attorneys and provides the pros and cons of each. The guide reviews the different advertising methods that are commonly used by attorneys and explains the difference between them. In the guide, I discuss which advertising methods are the most likely to be trustworthy. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, I describe some resources which are not readily available to the public, but which are used by attorneys on a daily basis when seeking to find a qualified lawyer either in another state or in a different field of practice. I give an explanation of where to find these resources and how to use them.

By reading this guidebook, you will understand what questions you need to ask of an attorney before retaining his services and learn about the resources that you can consult to determine whether or not an attorney is likely to have the type of experience and training that will enable him to provide you with the quality of representation that you deserve. By taking the time to read this guide and learn what you need to know before hiring an attorney, you will save yourself trouble down the road and will hopefully have a positive experience in the legal system and be satisfied with the services of any attorney that you retain.
